Seamless Panties Explained: What It Actually Means | Feier Skip to content

Seamless Panties, Explained

Seamless is the most misused word in underwear.

In India it usually means bonded: fabric cut from a roll and the edges glued or heat-sealed flat. That's one approach. It isn't the one we use, and it isn't what the word originally meant.

Ours are seamlessly knitted, which is a genuinely different thing. The garment comes off the knitting machine already formed, rather than being cut from flat fabric and joined.

I run Feier, and our underwear is made in our own factory in Mumbai. I've been in the family manufacturing business for thirteen years and we moved into seamless knitting in 2023, on Santoni machines. So this is a piece I have strong opinions about, and I'll tell you which ones are opinions.

The three ways underwear gets made

Whole-garment knitting: A circular knitting machine builds the garment as one continuous piece. Yarn goes in, a formed garment comes out. There are no side seams because nothing was cut and joined. The waistband is knitted as part of the fabric rather than attached afterwards. This is what we make.

Bonded or laser-cut: Fabric is cut from a roll and the edges are either glued with adhesive or heat-sealed. The edges come out extremely flat, which is why these are usually sold on the promise of no visible lines. There are still seams, they're just joined without thread.

Traditional stitched: Separate panels sewn together with thread, elastic stitched on at the waist and legs. Most underwear in the world is made this way. Nothing wrong with it, but the seams and the elastic edge are both things you can feel.

All three get called seamless by someone. Only one of them is actually knitted without seams.

Knitted and bonded solve different problems

Neither method is better in the abstract. They're good at different things, and it's worth knowing which thing you care about.

Where knitting wins: the waistband, and how it ages.

On stitched underwear, and on a lot of bonded underwear, the waistband is a separate piece of elastic attached to the body of the garment. That join is a hard line against your skin, it limits how far the waistband can stretch, and it's usually the first part to go. The elastic relaxes, the waistband loosens, and the pair stops being one you reach for.

Knit the waistband as part of the fabric and none of that happens. No seam at the waist to rub, nothing restricting the stretch, and the waistband ages at the same rate as the rest of the garment because it is the rest of the garment. Add no side seams, and there's nothing running down your hip under a fitted trouser and nothing to rub when you're walking in humidity.

Where bonding wins: the flattest possible edge.

A well-made bonded panty has a flatter edge than a knitted one can. If your priority is the smoothest possible line under thin, close-fitting fabric, bonding does that job better. It's the right tool for that specific problem.

What to actually watch for with bonding: the quality of the bond.

This is the part worth knowing. A bonded garment is held together by the bond, so how well it's done matters enormously. A good bond, properly applied with the right adhesive, lasts the life of the garment. A cheap one can start to lift at the edges, and heat, humidity, and repeated washing all accelerate that. It does happen, and when it happens, there's no fixing it.

So if you're buying bonded, buy it from someone who takes the bonding seriously. Price is usually a decent proxy. If you're buying knitted, there's no bond to fail, which is one less thing to think about.

Does seamless mean invisible?

No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.

Whether underwear shows through depends on five things, and construction is only one of them:

  • The cut: A thong has almost no fabric at the back. That's the only reliable way to have nothing show.
  • The edge: A knitted or bonded edge sits flatter than stitched elastic. Flatter, not invisible.
  • Fit: Underwear that's too small digs in and creates a line that wouldn't otherwise be there. Going down a size makes this worse, not better.
  • What's over it: Thin, pale, clingy fabric reveals everything. A structured trouser reveals almost nothing.
  • Fabric thickness: A thicker waistband shows through more.

From our range, thongs are the only style that genuinely disappears. The Classic Logo Thong, the BareLace Thong, the Sparkle Thong and the Everyday Sculpting Thong. Everything else will sit flatter than conventional underwear and may well show nothing under most clothes, but I'm not going to promise you it vanishes under a white slip dress.

What seamlessly knitted underwear actually feels like

This is the part that matters more than any of the above, and it's the hardest to put in a product description.

Nearly all our underwear is a nylon and spandex blend, 92/8. That ratio is where the softness and the stretch come from, and it's why the fabric recovers its shape rather than going baggy at the back. Every pair carries N9 Pure Silver™, a silver-based antimicrobial finish that works on the bacteria that cause odour, which matters more in Mumbai than it does in most places.

Our Classic Logo series is the one most people start with and our most popular range by a distance. Buttery soft, a wide colour range, available in every shape we make: thong, bikini, hipster, boyshort and a ribbed panelled high waisted brief. It has a tonal logo knitted into the fabric, so it does the job of a plain everyday pair without actually being plain.

The Everyday Sculpting range is a smooth jersey with an extended waistband and light compression. It shapes gently rather than holding you in, which is the difference between underwear you wear all day and underwear you take off at 6pm.

Four myths worth clearing up

Shop: Classic Logo Hipster | Classic Logo Flex Brief | Classic Logo Thong

Seamless means no seams anywhere. Not usually. Most underwear sold as seamless has fewer seams, or seams joined without thread. Whole-garment knitting is the only method where the garment genuinely comes out formed.

Every seamless panty is invisible. No. Cut matters more than construction. A thong in conventional fabric will show less than a bonded boyshort.

Laser-cut and seamlessly knitted are the same thing. They aren't. Laser-cut describes how an edge is finished. Knitted describes how the whole garment is made. A laser-cut panty can have plenty of other seams.

Tighter means smoother. The opposite. Underwear that's too small digs in and creates exactly the line you're trying to avoid.

How to care for knitted underwear

Cold water, washed with similar colours, air dried. The thing that kills elastane is heat, so a dryer or direct afternoon sun will cost you stretch faster than anything else. A wash bag helps if you're using a machine.

Knitted underwear holds up well to this, because there's no adhesive to break down and no stitched elastic to relax independently of the fabric.

The short version

Don't buy on the word seamless. Check how it's made.

If you want the flattest possible edge under something very thin, bonded does that best, and the quality of the bonding is what to judge it on. If you want underwear that's comfortable from morning to night, stretches properly and has nothing that can come apart, you want it knitted. And if you genuinely need nothing to show, you want a thong, whatever the construction.

FAQs

What does seamless mean in panties?

It depends on who's using the word. It can mean whole-garment knitted, where the garment is knitted as one piece with no cut-and-join seams. It can mean bonded or laser-cut, where fabric is cut and the edges glued or heat-sealed. Feier underwear is seamlessly knitted.

Are seamless panties actually seam-free?

Whole-garment knitted underwear has no side seams, because nothing was cut and joined. Bonded and laser-cut underwear still has seams; they're just joined without thread. Always ask which one you're buying.

Are seamless panties invisible under clothes?

Not automatically. Cut matters more than construction. A thong is the only style that reliably shows nothing under fitted clothing. Other styles sit flatter than conventional underwear but can still show under thin or clingy fabric.

What is the difference between seamless knitting and bonded underwear?

Seamless knitting forms the garment on the machine, so there are no cut-and-join seams and the waistband is knitted in. Bonded underwear is cut from flat fabric with the edges glued or heat-sealed. Bonded gives a flatter edge. Knitted gives more stretch and has no bond that can lift over time. Both work. If you're buying bonded, the quality of the bonding is the thing to judge.

Why does the waistband matter so much?

Because it's what most people actually complain about. A stitched or attached elastic waistband is a hard line against your skin, it limits the stretch, and it's the first part to relax. A knitted waistband is part of the fabric, so there's no seam to rub and nothing restricting how far it gives.

Are seamless panties good for everyday wear?

Yes, and that's what most of ours are made for. Look at fit, waistband and coverage rather than the label. Our Classic Logo series is the most popular starting point, and the Everyday Sculpting range if you want light all-day shaping.

Which seamless panty style is best for everyday?

Hipster, for most people. It sits lower than a brief, covers more than a bikini and works under almost everything. Go thong for fitted clothing, high waisted for high-rise jeans, boyshort for dresses and skirts.

How do I wash seamless underwear?

Cold water, similar colours, air dried. Avoid the dryer and direct strong sunlight, since heat is what breaks down the stretch.
